North York covers a large area and numerous smaller neighbourhoods, which offers residents many amenities, including schools, restaurants, shopping centres, recreation facilities, and parks. Residents have many public transportation options to choose from, with routes providing access throughout the neighbourhood and to other areas of the city.

There is plenty to do in North York for people of all ages. Those looking for shopping opportunities have a few choices. Yorkdale Shopping Centre in the southern section of the neighbourhood is home to over 270 shops and services. Residents can shop for clothing, accessories, gifts, footwear, beauty products, home furnishings and décor items, entertainment and technology goods, books, and sporting goods. Services include banking, salons, healthcare, optical, shoe repair, tailoring, and a post office. CF Fairview Mall in the eastern section of the neighbourhood has over 170 stores and services, a movie theatre, and a food court. Those interested in sports can head to the Aviva Centre, a multipurpose sports and entertainment complex with a stadium, multiple tennis courts, a large gymnasium, meeting rooms, and an outdoor entertainment area. Events held at the centre include tennis matches, basketball games, indoor rowing competitions, fencing competitions, university convocation ceremonies, concerts, and filming sessions for television and movies.

The most common housing types in North York are apartments and detached single-family homes, although there are also some other dwelling types available. The average price for homes in the area is $1,103,464, which is much higher than the average price for single-detached homes in Toronto overall ($730,472). The population of North York is 672,955, and this has been rising slightly for the past 15 years. Families make up 51% of the population here, 29% are couples, and 20% are single. The average annual income is $89,867, which is higher than the average annual income in the city as a whole, and 81% of residents are university or college educated.
Pollution / Noise
Much like other areas of the city, North York can experience air quality issues from traffic and businesses. Noise issues are common near major roadways and busy commercial sections.
Crime Rate
Compared to other nearby neighbourhoods, North York has a relatively low crime rate. The most common types of crime in the area are break and enter (commercial and residential) and theft.

Public Transportation
Because the neighbourhood covers such a large area, there are numerous Toronto Transit Commission routes to choose from. These include regular bus routes and streetcar routes. The Barrie GO, Union Pearson Express, and Richmond Hill GO services also run through the neighbourhood, as do the 1 - Yonge-University and 4 - Sheppard subway lines. Routes running through the neighbourhood provide access to other areas of Toronto, as well as surrounding communities.
Family Life
There are numerous parks throughout North York, ranging in size from small playground areas to large multi-use spaces. Rowntree Mills Park is a 92-hectare space in the northwestern section of the neighbourhood that offers bike trails, walking paths, a fieldhouse, picnic sites, a pond, and restroom facilities. Edwards Gardens in the southeastern section of North York features various floral displays with perennials, roses, wildflowers, rhododendrons, and other plants. The gardens also have an arboretum (tree displays), a children’s teaching garden, water features, and walking paths. Windfields Park in the northern section offers bike trails, walking paths, a playground, benches, treed areas, and greenspace.
