          Realtor Resume Writing Tips

Real estate agents have a large impact on many peoples’ lives. The acts of buying and selling a home can be extremely stressful for the regular John or Mary, and they rely on the experience and expertise of realtor to make the process as smooth as possible.

As a real estate agent you’ll have to wear many hats. A successful agent has to be adept in a variety of skills, such as:

          • Generating leads through various marketing campaigns, like phone calls, email, and online ads

          • Negotiating deals between buyers and sellers that can also lead to the need to resolve conflicts

          • Holding open houses as well as escorting potential buyers to properties that match their needs

          • Creating legal documents like lease agreements, contracts, and deeds

          • Consistently keeping up to date with the local and national real estate market trends

All of that might seem like a tall task, and it is. But, the good news is if you are willing to put in the time and effort, you earn a nice living. The average full-time real estate agent can expect to make upwards of $50,000 annually. An extremely successful agent can even make double that value, or more.

          1. Action Verbs for a Real Estate Resume

Hungry for more verbs? The longest action verb list in universe has everything you need.

          2. Skip the Career Objective and Go With a Professional Profile

Every real estate broker knows why you want a job. What they don’t know is why they should take you on board. Using a professional profile instead of a career objective is a great way to quickly show a potential employer why they should invest more time into reading the rest of your resume.

In the very first line of the professional profile you should deliver the most important information, and that is the fact you are a licensed and have experience.

          • “Licensed Realtor with 8+ years of residential and commercial sales experience”

By getting that front and center, you tell the employer you’re serious and not a total beginner simply testing the job market.

Mentioning the type of real estate sales you’re most familiar with useful too. It let’s a realtor know if you two are a good fit for each other and can save both their time and yours. Wasting valuable job-hunting time interviewing for the wrong position is something that’s best avoided.

The process of applying and interviewing for a new position can be extremely time consuming, so make sure to tailor your job hunt. If you want a residential real estate sales position, don’t spend time applying to industrial leasing agent position.

Then, make sure to add some information about something you do extremely well, additional complementary skills, and any achievements or awards you have been given. Don’t be afraid to use some hard numbers to really showcase yourself.

This is weak and leaves your claim of being an expert up for interpretation.

Expert in planning and integrating new customer prospecting campaigns

By stating hard numbers you leave no doubt about your abilities.

Expert in planning and integrating new customer prospecting campaigns increasing agencies acquisition rate by an average of 21% year-to-year

          3. More Numbers Means More Interviews

Make no mistake; a real estate agent is a salesperson. Making deals is the name of the game. The lifestyle might not be as extreme as what Glengarry Glen Ross portrays, but you are expected to close deals and earn your firm money. The best way to do this is with real numbers.

In Dawn’s resume sample above, she first started to quantify her success in the professional profile. She didn’t stop there.

In the Professional Experience section we can see:

There is nothing fancy here, just raw data proving the applicant can sell houses. By stating how many properties she closes on each year she gives the employer an idea about the scale of her ability.

The applicant also uses numbers to show that she wasn’t only completing transactions, but she was maximizing her earnings on each sale.

          • “Advise sellers on how to make homes more appealing to potential buyers increasing average selling prices by 16% from initial appraisals”

She even goes as far as to specify exactly how much more, in terms of a percentage, that she increased property values and therefor increased commissions for the broker.

Another way to present your value is to include any training, mentoring, or leadership roles you have taken on:

          • Conduct quarterly seminars and training sessionsfor sales agents to improve sales techniques

Dawn was such a good salesperson that her firm trusted her with improving all of their agents’ sales strategies. That’s a massive endorsement that absolutely must be included on a resume.

In the world of real estate sales, numbers mean almost everything. Don’t try and convince an employer that you’re great at your job with buzzwords and adjectives, but instead with numbers that show you know how to make them money.

          4. Show You’re in the Know in the Additional Skills Section

Dawn already mentioned that she was licensed in the Professional Profile section, but it’s a good idea to include where you are licensed and when you received it further down the resume.

don’t forget to mention any related clubs or organizations that you’re a member of

Here is a list of skills and traits that real estate agents should demonstrate on their resume:

And, don’t forget to mention any related clubs or organizations that you’re a member of. Letting a potential employer know that you keep up to date with and are actively involved in the real estate community is one more indication of how serious you are about the real estate industry.

Show that you are a full-time dedicated agent and not a part-time real estate dabbler.
