Historically, Waterloo had no high schools until the 1960’s. Around 1958 Waterloo was given the green light to build its own high school, and $1,247,268 was set aside to build it. Eventually, the high school was built on a 20 acre-lot. The school was named the Waterloo Collegiate Institute and opened on September 6, 1960. This construction opened the flood gates sort of speak. Waterloo opened several high schools in the 1960’s.
